Recognition for Quality Programs
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, in support of its mission to provide
the health and wellness solutions people value most, has developed a program
to recognize hospitals, clinics and physicians in Nebraska for achievement in
established health care quality improvement programs. Recognition for Quality
provides an opportunity for a collaborative effort linking BCBSNE with its providers
for the common goal of improving the quality of health care that their patients,
our members, receive. Health care providers demonstrating a commitment to quality
improvement receive either a plaque or an award certificate that can be displayed
for patient viewing.
Hospital and physician achievement in other nationally recognized health care
quality improvement programs may be added to our Recognition for Quality program
as consistent with our mission to provide the health and wellness solutions
people value most. Members are encouraged to consider these programs when making
health care choices.
Blue Distinction Centers
BCBSNE has collaborated with other Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans and the
Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, to develop a national program to identify
Blue Distinction Centers. Currently these centers focus on Cardiac Care, Bariatric
Surgery, Complex and Rare Cancers and Transplant Services. Spine, Knee and Hip Surgery is in process and planned for early 2010. Each Center has been
selected through a rigorous evaluation of clinical data that provides insight
into the facility's structures, processes and outcomes of care. These nationally
established criteria were developed with input from medical experts and organizations
and support the consistent, objective assessment of specialty care capabilities.
By meeting these requirements, the centers demonstrate better outcomes and consistency
of care and provide greater value for Blue members locally and nationally. back to top
Physician Maintenance of Board Certification
BCBSNE promotes maintenance of physician medical board certification by recognizing
internal medicine physicians for completing a physician practice quality improvement
activity in the office setting. Maintenance of medical board certification is
one marker of quality that patients can consider when choosing a physician.
BCBSNE was the first health plan in the nation to collaborate with the American
Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to promote maintenance of certification through
quality improvement. Expansion of this program to other primary care physician
practitioners is in development.back to top
