In The Community
As a Nebraska-based company, we believe it’s our responsibility to be
an active member of the communities in which our customers live and work. We
pride ourselves on the trustworthiness of our brand and the confidence that
others have placed in us. By fulfilling our corporate commitments and demonstrating
integrity in all of our business dealings, we hope to earn the trust and respect
of our customers and the public at large, as dependable corporate citizens.
We are especially committed to the health and well-being of Nebraskans. Through
contributions to organizations throughout the state that support programs and
initiatives which build healthier communities, we are living our mission to
exist to deliver the health and wellness solutions people value most. Read more
about the programs and initiatives we support below.
Activate Omaha
BCBSNE has been an Activate Omaha
sponsor since the program began in 2004. Activate Omaha, a community-wide program
formed to create awareness, advocacy and excitement about activity and the
importance of designing Omaha for active lifestyles, continues to develop and
implement innovative health and wellness programs. Furthermore, the program
encourages changes in urban design, land use and transportation policies to
cultivate and promote active living while integrating physical activity into
daily routines. Back to Top
Mobile Screening Unit
For many years, BCBSNE has partnered with the Nebraska Lions Foundation to offer
free health screenings throughout the state through their Mobile Screening Unit
(MSU). We continue to work with the Nebraska Lions Foundation to expand MSU
services to include corporate screenings for larger Blue Cross groups. The goal
of these corporate screenings is to emphasize the importance of employee wellness,
offer groups a health-related value-add program and increase the number of adult
screenings across Nebraska.
The unit is equipped to test eyesight (including glaucoma screening and visual
acuity), hearing, blood sugar level (diabetes) and blood pressure (hypertension).
Lions Club Volunteers as well as local health care professionals aid in administering
these screenings.
Nebraska Sports Council N-Lighten Kids
N-Lighten Kids
is a free, three-month competition designed to encourage young Nebraskans to
incorporate exercise into their everyday routine and make better food choices.
The competition begins in January and concludes in April with N-Lighten Kids Day,
a one-day event taking place in Nebraska schools in celebration of National
Fitness Month. By sponsoring this program, BCBSNE is helping teach kids about
the importance of being physically active to make fitness fun! Back to Top
Salvation Army
We have a long history in supporting the magnificent work accomplished throughout
the year by The Salvation Army. Our President and CEO, Mr. Steven S. Martin,
has served on the Advisory Board for The Salvation Army since 2002.
BCBSNE, along with our neighboring companies along 72nd Street, participates
in a friendly competition to raise food items for those served by The Salvation
Army. All participating companies set a goal to collect quality over quantity
to ensure we gave The Salvation Army a wide selection of nutritious options
from which to choose when feeding the hungry in Omaha.
BCBSNE employees have a proud tradition of donating both time and money to Adopt-A-Family,
an annual project that allows us to adopt numerous families who are identified
as having the greatest need over the holiday season by The Salvation Army. We
also participate in corporate kettle ringing when employees ring bells at sites
throughout Omaha. Back to Top
United Way of the Midlands
Steve Martin and Amy Haddad have served as past Chairpersons for the United
Way of the Midlands campaign. BCBSNE’s corporate gift and our employees’
contributions were used to assist the 145 United Way programs and 50 partner
agencies.
In addition, BCBSNE participates in the United Way Day of Caring, one of the
largest one-day community service events in Omaha. Community-minded organizations
and individuals volunteer on this day for projects that non-profit organizations
often don’t have the resources to accomplish on their own. We are excited
about the opportunity to send a group of managers to give their time and talent
to one of the agencies that the United Way of the Midlands supports. Back to Top
WELCOM’s Well Workplace Nebraska Program
The Wellness Council of the Midlands (WELCOM), the nation’s oldest corporate
health promotion organization, has nearly 25 years of experience in implementing
comprehensive wellness programs throughout the state of Nebraska. BCBSNE has
sponsored exclusively WELCOM’s Well Workplace Nebraska program since 2004.
The Well Workplace Nebraska objective is to educate worksites on how to implement
effective and individualized health promotion programs specific to unique characteristics
and priority health concerns of each business throughout central and western
Nebraska.
Facilitators offer interactive day-long workshops to train organizations on
how to become “Well Workplaces” by improving their employee health
promotion program. This project has introduced and created the Well Workplace©
model in rural Nebraska communities in Central and Western Nebraska including
Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Scottsbluff, Aurora, Wayne, Norfolk, Columbus,
McCook, Chadron, and the O’Neill-region. Back to Top
